#1: Follow the two-two-two rule: following the “two-two-two rule” is the easiest way to ensure that your child maintains a healthy smile. It involves taking your child to the dentist two times a year, brushing and flossing their teeth two times a day and teaching them to brush for two whole minutes. You can even make it fun for your child by having them brush along to a two-minute song.
#2: Use dental products with fluoride: fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been added to the drinking water in many cities. This mineral can benefit your child’s dental health by strengthening tooth enamel and making them more resistant to tooth decay. If your water supply does not contain fluoride, you can use a toothpaste that contains it or ask your doctor for chewable tablets.
#3: Keep your baby’s mouth clean: even before your baby develops teeth, it is important to make sure that their mouth and gums are clean. You can clear away bacteria with a damp washcloth two times a day—which may be best right after breakfast and before bedtime. Once your baby develops at least one tooth, you can begin to use a small smear of fluoride toothpaste to keep their mouth clean.
#4: Feed your kids a balanced diet: one of the most important things that you can do as a parent is to feed your kids healthy food and drinks. Not only is this good for their overall health, but it can help them to avoid tooth decay and cavities. Avoid food and drinks with a lot of sugar. Instead of giving your children candy or cookies, make it a habit to incorporate fruit and vegetables into every meal.
#5: Teach your child how to brush: brushing two times a day may not be enough to stave off tooth decay if your child does not know how to do so properly. Teach them good technique by giving them a soft-bristled toothbrush and showing them where to start first. We recommend brushing the inside surface of each tooth first and then moving on to the outer surfaces and the tongue.
#6: Don’t ignore the warning signs: if you have noticed that your child’s teeth have become discolored or that they have started to experience pain when brushing, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately. Don’t wait to take care of the problem, as it may only get worse with time. Even if their next dental check-up is around the corner, it won’t do your child any good to wait.
