Are you concerned that you might have gum disease? If so, you are not alone. There are many adults in the United States that are suffering from some form of gum disease.
Gum disease, otherwise known as periodontal disease can involve a simple case of gum inflammation, but in severe cases the disease can do so much destruction, that it results in tooth loss.
Whether your gum disease is stopped, slowed down, or gets progressively worse all depends on how well you care for your gums and teeth from this day forward.
WHY DO PEOPLE GET GUM DISEASE?
Peoples’ mouths are chock full of bacteria. Bacteria, along with mucus and food particles are constantly forming a sticky substance called plaque on the teeth.
While brushing and flossing help remove bacteria, if some plaque is not removed, it will harden and turn into “tartar,” which no amount of brushing can clean. The only way to eliminate tartar buildup is to have a dentist or dental hygienist remove it.
If plaque and tartar are left unchecked, the bacteria will cause inflammation of the gums – this is known as “gingivitis.” People with gingivitis experience red, swollen gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing.
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into “periodontitis,” which refers to inflammation around the tooth. With periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth forming pockets that become infected.
If periodontitis is left untreated, the gums, tissue, and bones that support the teeth will be destroyed, and the teeth may ultimately become loose and need to be removed.
Risk factors for gum disease:
- Receiving cancer treatment
- Hormonal changes experienced by girls and women
- Certain medications (which reduce saliva production)
