Dr. Naysan and the team at Bedford Dental Group would like to take a moment to express our gratitude and appreciation for the men and women we’ve lost while they were serving our country. Maybe that’s why Memorial Day happens to be the unofficial start of summer, where we acknowledge those who’ve passed as the season starts to bloom.
Some Quick Memorial Day Facts from Bedford Dental Group
Memorial Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1971, but Americans had been gathering annually in the springtime to remember those lost in America’s wars as early as the 1860s, right after the Civil War. Memorial Day is now celebrated on the last Monday in the month of May. To this day, people still decorate the grave sites of the war veterans in their family or fallen heroes to whom they were close.
Before, Memorial Day was long known as Decoration Day for that very reason. People adorned graves with flowers, wreaths, flags, and personalized items of relevance. On Memorial Day, it is customary to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.
Memorial Day and Summer
Somehow, the extended weekend turned into a summer event. It happens to be the kickoff of summer, mainly because college students are out of school. If there’s a lake, ocean, or beach nearby, you can bet they’ll be headed there along with the weekend warriors trying to forget those nine to fives.
For many folks, the prospect of getting out of town for three days after being cooped up in the office or the classroom sounds like a welcome relief. Memorial Day might entail eating foods we normally wouldn’t eat, perhaps partaking in adult or even sugary beverages over the course of the day. In short, we’re likely not practicing the best oral hygiene.
Practice Great Oral Hygiene Over Memorial Day Weekend
We’d like to also take the time to remind our patients and readers to practice good oral hygiene over this extended weekend. You don’t want to put yourself in an unfortunate position down the road where you remember the beautiful smile you once had. Good oral health is also directly linked to good overall health, and more scientific evidence is stressing this fact every day.
Bedford Dental Group would like to wish you a happy Memorial Day Weekend, from us to you. We also want to remind you to incorporate the healthy dental wellness habits that will provide you with good oral health and age-defying protection. You can also schedule your checkup, your dental cleaning, or your comprehensive dental exam over these summer months to beat the crowds and stay on top of your oral health wellness.
