Which foods stain my teeth?
While coffee, wine, and tobacco are some of the obvious causes of tooth staining, there are other culprits that can affect the brightness of your teeth as well. Unfortunately, some of your favorite foods and beverages may be on this list:
- Dark fruit juices
- Wine (red and white)
- Soy sauce
It is perfectly okay to still enjoy these foods; however, if you want you can drink your juice, coffee and soda through a straw, and be sure to rinse your mouth out or brush your teeth thoroughly afterward.
Foods that Can Actually Prevent Tooth Stains
We have good news, there are some foods that actually scrub your teeth naturally while you chew. They also help you produce saliva, which cleans your mouth while counteracting acid. Dental friendly foods that help prevent stains include hard cheeses, apples, carrots, celery, and cauliflower.
Other ways to keep your teeth white include flossing daily, drinking everything but water from a straw, brushing twice daily, and getting your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year.
We highly recommend that you avoid smoking as smoking not only increases your risk of serious medical conditions such as lung and mouth cancer, but it is also bad for your teeth. Whether you chew or smoke tobacco, it does contribute to stained teeth.
